Character: Artemis Fowl II
Series/Fandom: Artemis Fowl book series
Original or Alternate: Original
Age: 14, almost 15
Gender: Male
Species: Human, with magic.
Sexuality: Heterosexual.
Appearance: Artemis has black hair and one blue-black eye, and one hazel eye that seems to be a bit small for his eye socket. His skin is so pale that people have mistaken him for a vampire. If one pays close attention, Artemis’s first finger and middle finger have switched positions. He is usually found wearing suits, but when he arrives in Econtra, his usual Armani suit is battered, tattered, and torn, and he is covered in scrapes and scratches.
Personality: Artemis Fowl, at first glance, is a cruel and evil man. To most people, he is cold and blunt, and enjoys flaunting his genius here and there, usually to help get them out of his way. He harbors many negative personality traits like selfishness, cruelty, and disregard for human and fairy life. But, to the people he cares about, for business matters or otherwise, he is more open. Friendly and nice wouldn’t quite be the words to describe him, but he is definitely more amiable and bearable. The people he draws closest to, however, are usually Butler and various staff of the Lower Elements Police, who are between 30 and 800 years older than him (these are estimates). He generally draws away from people his own age, unless their intellect comes close to his own.
Despite his nature, he does have a sense of justice and a conscience. He just doesn’t use or show it often. But recently, it has poked out with concern for civilian lives in Taipei and other instances. He is always logical, even in crises where normal people would break down. He is also preoccupied with stealing money, gold, or other treasures when he’s not working with the LEP.
Artemis has a soft spot in his heart for his parents since his father was kidnapped by the Russian Mafia when he was eleven and his mother fell into insanity. With both of them sane now, he is particularly worried for their actions and reactions.
Abilities/Strengths: Artemis is a child genius. It wouldn’t be a stretch of the mind to imagine him as the smartest person alive on the planet today. When he was a child, he was apparently the smartest person to come about since Mozart. He is extremely knowledgeable on just about all subjects, particularly fairy-related ones. He is fluent in Gnommish, the fairy language, and knows all of their technologies.
Recently, he has gained some magic. He can now heal himself magically, use the mesmer (an attack where anyone will fall into a hypnotic state and believe anything that is told to them or do anything they are told to do), and use other fairy talents. His lifespan may also have been increased dramatically, but I’m not entirely sure on that yet (canon never mentioned that bit).
Notable Possessions: None, except for his magic.
Weaknesses: Artemis may be a genius, but he’s still only 14. And a really physically weak 14-year-old at that. With Butler to do all the physical work, Artemis is usually extremely weak against physical fights without him, and isn’t accustomed to being hit. When he arrives, he is very tattered and injured from the time tunnel, so even then he is not at his best.
He also has magic, and will easily figure out how to use it, but he doesn’t exactly have a large reserve of it. He only has a small bit of it right now. He is also susceptible to any of the magical attacks someone else might use on him.
Oh, and puberty. No, I’m not kidding you here. He’s 14, a genius, and a criminal mastermind. The last thing he needs is to look the other way at some girl every other second during a crucial scheme because he’s hormonal (which he has actually done).
History: This is a really condensed history up until Lost Colony mostly because Colfer likes making everything far more complicated than it has to be, and if I went into more detail for everything, this history would be eight pages long on its own. So for your sanity and mine, it’s been heavily, heavily condensed.
Artemis Fowl II was born into an extremely wealthy criminal family in Ireland. Artemis grew up with the family motto: “Aurum potestas est (Gold is power).” When Artemis’s father, Artemis Fowl I, was taken by the Russian Mafia on a boat with cola imports, Artemis’s mother became a shut-in who hallucinated. Artemis Fowl (II) vowed to continue his family’s criminal endeavors. With Artemis’s genius, there wasn’t a single problem, and he was able to reap in millions, possibly billions of dollars with patents, forged items, and more. Then, after some browsing on the Internet, he was led to believe in the existence of fairies. He led his bodyguard, Butler, on a wild chase to find fairies and inside information on them. He came back home to Fowl Manor with the Book in hand (the fairies’ book of laws and information—comparable to the Bible, except not). Translating it from Gnommish to English, he learned the fairy technology and captured an elf from the LEP (Lower Elements Police), a certain Captain Holly Short. The entire LEP goes above ground to go and get her back, and through a lot of unaccounted revelations and events, Holly Short eventually returns to the LEP, but only after restoring Artemis’s mother’s sanity and handing over a certain amount of gold.
A short while later, when Artemis is attending school again for his mother’s sake, he receives an untraceable email, presumably from his father, who was hostage-bound. When he leaves for Russia, he meets Holly Short again. This time, he has to put down a goblin revolution on the way to saving his father from whatever fate the Russian Mafia had in mind. Throughout the adventure they required the help of a dwarf named Much Diggums (dwarfs are creatures who can burrow under the ground and are generally miner-types) who helped retrieve Holly Short in the first book. Holly also lost a finger and reattached it, and the goblin revolution was resolved. Artemis’s father was safely brought back.
Artemis, with both of his parents back and sane now, is about to go back to boarding school, and is ready to pull off one more dirty business trick. Combining fairy technology (which makes human technology look like the first fire) and human technology, he makes a device that is far ahead of anything humans had beforehand made. Meeting with Jon Spiro, a business tycoon, he offers a business deal. But, Spiro turns the tables and ends up stealing the cube for himself, nearly killing Butler while he was at it. The only reason Butler survives is because Artemis used cryogenics and fairy healing magic, courtesy of Holly Short. Butler comes out of the experience 15 years older, with his Kevlar vest now practically soldered to his ribcage. To get the invention (called the C Cube) back, Artemis has to team up with the LEP yet again, and Butler’s younger sister Juliet. With Artemis’s intellect and LEP advanced technology, they get the C Cube back and thwart Spiro’s plans. But at the end of the ordeal, the LEP decides that having Artemis meddling in fairy affairs is too dangerous and decide to mind-wipe him of everything fairy-related. Artemis agrees and gives them permission, but he leaves Mulch with a little golden coin, which is actually a diskette with all the information Artemis knows about fairies on it.
This doesn’t mean Artemis’s adventures are over, though. Opal Koboi, who has been put in an asylum after the events of the goblin revolution, has escaped and tricked Holly and her boss, Commander Root, into a magma chute, sticking a bomb onto Commander Root. She is told that there is one way to save him—to hit a very remote, tiny spot on the detonator. But if she misses, the bomb will go off even sooner. Naturally, Holly tries to hit the spot with her gun. And she misses. And Commander Root dies. But before he died, he told her to go save Artemis, since he would be Opal’s next victim. So she goes above ground to get Artemis Fowl and protect him, all the while being framed for Root’s death.
Artemis Fowl, on the other hand, is lucky enough to be out of the house, pulling off a heist to steal a precious artwork. Holly plucks him out during the heist and takes him to a fairy safe-house to restore his memories, but Opal destroys the safe-house before she can do anything. Artemis is lucky to record the whole thing on his phone, the recording transmitted to Fowl Manor. Meanwhile, Mulch has escaped from prison in the lower elements and found Butler, restoring his memories. They find the recording and set out to find Artemis, who has meanwhile been placed in an abandoned theme park full of trolls. He and Holly have both been sprayed with a special mixture that makes the trolls think that they are female trolls and they are ready to mate. Just as Artemis and Holly are facing death, Butler and Mulch rescue them.
While they’re busy rescuing Artemis and Holly from trolls, Opal has gone above ground and mesmerized an environmentalist by the name of Zito to think that she is his adopted daughter. Through Zito, Opal sends down a probe that will go straight down to the lower elements where the fairy people reside and destroy Haven, the biggest city of the lower elements. Artemis, by this time, has restored his memories thanks to the disk Mulch had on hand and the probe’s detonator was put into Opal’s shuttle. Just before it exploded she narrowly escaped, but had to hide above ground, losing her magic when she inserted human hormones to make her appear more human. With the Opal crisis dealt with, Artemis goes back home, but keeps in touch with Holly now and then.
Artemis is now 14 going on 15, and has put himself in a new adventure now. Following a bunch of calculations stolen from the LEP without their knowledge, he can predict the appearance of demons, considered the eighth ‘lost’ family of fairies. They appear in various areas around the world in various times, and Artemis has sent himself and Butler around the world in search of them. When a demon shows up in the middle of Barcelona, he grabs onto it and is transported back to the past as the demon keeps popping around various times. Butler manages to pull Artemis back, though, to discover that Artemis’s fingers have switched positions in the time tunnel—his first finger is now switched with his middle finger, on both hands.
After the Opal disaster, Holly has become a bounty hunter, working with Mulch, when an LEP officer had come up and offered her a job in Section 8, an independent section of the LEP all its own that works with reports about demons. She learns that the time spell holding the demons on an island floating somewhere in time and space is starting to fall apart, a conclusion that Artemis has already reached. For the fourth time, Artemis and Holly work together to try and prevent the situation.
Here is where No 1 comes into play. No 1 is an imp—equivalent to a child—who should have warped (similar to demon puberty) ages ago. He is not yet a full-fledged demon, and demons do not have magic. But, demon warlocks do have magic—they just never warp. No 1 is beginning to think that he is a warlock. No 1 is the lucky imp to be sent through dimensions to Earth in present time, where Artemis and a rival await him. Artemis sent Holly to get him, but the rival got there first, taking No 1 hostage.
Through some investigation, Artemis finds that the rival is Minerva Paradizo, another child prodigy like him, although two years younger and French. She is holding No 1 hostage, and is unaware of the time spell unravelling. It takes an infiltration, ‘stealing’ No 1 from her, pulling apart her security system, and forcing her to realize the situation before she understands what is going on. Unfortunately, by this time, one of the security men she had hired, Billy Kong, took control of the heist because of a childhood grudge, holding Minerva hostage and exchanging her for the demon.
Artemis holds the exchange in the building Taipei 101, in Taipei, Taiwan. After the exchange, he cons Billy Kong so that he gets both Minerva and No 1 safely, then hides in an art exhibition in the building that has a stone statue of figures that look similar to No 1. Artemis convinces No 1 to try and ‘communicate’ with the stone statue, and No 1 finds that first off, he is an actual warlock, and that there was another, elder warlock in the stone statue. After freeing him, Artemis, Qwan the elder warlock, No 1, and Holly abandon Kong (and Butler and Minerva) in Taipei 101 to go straight to the demon island and keep the time spell from unravelling. By this time, Holly has a bomb attached to her wrist.
When they arrive, the king of the demons, Abbot, is getting his demons rallied up and ready to fight humans. They proceed to attack the group of fairies, humans, and warlocks while Qwan and No 1 try to set up a magic circle so they can move the island somewhere safe. But they don’t have enough warlocks for a magic circle, so they use any being with magical powers. Artemis notices that most of the demons have been mesmerized over and over again (their pupils were extremely ragged), and calls Abbot out on being a warlock, even though he has warped. At this point, Artemis reveals that he himself has magic, after snagging some of it when it was floating around in the time tunnel on the way to the island.
The onslaught of demons is slowly handled as Artemis figures out the pattern of how time shifts on the unstable island. Eventually, Abbott kills Holly while he is counting, and he waits for the opportune moment to pick up a gun. He shot the wrong way, but due to the time fluctuation, when it came back it hit Abbot and knocked him out. Qwan, No 1, Holly, Artemis, and Abbot together were enough to complete the magic circle.
Together, they began to move the island in its entirety through the time tunnel to a safe location in time and space. Holly was in charge of finding the specific location, and Artemis in charge of finding the time period. But just as he was preparing to land the island down, he is dragged into Econtra.
